Psychological Evaluations for Surgical Readiness and Treatment Planning

A pre-surgical psychological evaluation assesses psychological, behavioral, and social factors that may affect preparation, recovery, adherence, and long-term outcomes. The goal is to support safe treatment planning—not to judge or automatically disqualify a patient.

What Is a Pre-Surgical Psychological Evaluation?

Assessment may consider understanding of the procedure, expectations, motivation, coping, mental health history, substance use, support systems, adherence, and the ability to make informed decisions. The scope is guided by the procedure and referring program’s requirements.

Types of Pre-Surgical Evaluations

Bariatric Surgery Psychological Evaluations

Assessment considers eating and behavioral patterns, expectations, readiness for lifestyle changes, support, adherence, and psychological factors relevant to long-term outcomes.

Spinal Cord Stimulator & Pain Evaluations

Assessment may examine chronic pain, emotional functioning, coping, expectations, treatment history, and factors relevant to pain management.

Other Procedures

We may provide evaluation for other medical procedures when the requested scope is within our services.

What Does the Evaluation Include?

The process may include a clinical interview, standardized questionnaires, review of medical or referral records, and additional psychological testing when appropriate. A written report is prepared for the referring provider or program.

What Happens If Concerns Are Identified?

Identifying a concern does not automatically prevent surgery. Recommendations may include education, treatment, behavioral preparation, or additional support to improve readiness and outcomes.
