Psychological Evaluation for Bariatric Surgery
Many bariatric and metabolic surgery programs require a psychological evaluation before surgery. The purpose is to identify strengths, preparation needs, and supports that can contribute to a safe procedure and sustainable postoperative changes.

What the Evaluation Considers
The evaluation may address understanding of the procedure, expectations, motivation, eating patterns, behavioral health history, substance use, coping, support systems, adherence, and readiness for significant lifestyle changes.

What to Expect
The process typically includes a clinical interview, standardized questionnaires, and review of relevant surgical-program requirements or records. Additional assessment is included when clinically appropriate.

Recommendations and Reporting
A written report summarizes findings and recommendations for the surgical team. When concerns are identified, recommendations may include education, behavioral preparation, treatment, or additional support; this does not automatically mean surgery cannot proceed.
