Clarity for Students

Psychological Testing for College & University Students

College and graduate school can bring longstanding difficulties with attention, organization, learning, executive functioning, social communication, or emotional functioning into sharper focus.

Some students seek an evaluation because they have struggled for years without fully understanding why. Others may have received previous diagnoses or treatment but continue to have questions about their symptoms, functioning, or diagnostic picture.

Cogniscribe provides individualized psychological evaluations designed around the specific questions that bring each person to testing.

Evaluations may help clarify diagnoses, identify cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses, guide treatment recommendations, and provide documentation and recommendations when appropriate.

Evaluations We Provide

ADHD Evaluations

Comprehensive ADHD evaluations for students experiencing difficulties with attention, organization, impulsivity, time management, task initiation, executive functioning, or related concerns. Our evaluations also consider anxiety, mood, learning, autism, and other conditions that can resemble or occur alongside ADHD.

Autism Evaluations

Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations

Some psychological concerns do not fit neatly into a single diagnosis. Comprehensive diagnostic evaluations are designed for individuals with complex symptoms, overlapping concerns, previous diagnoses that may not fully explain their experiences, or uncertainty about what may be contributing to their difficulties. Assessment may consider ADHD, autism, anxiety, mood, learning, cognitive functioning, and other psychological or neurodevelopmental factors.

No Diagnosis Needed

You Don’t Need to Know the Diagnosis Before You Contact Us

Some students come to Cogniscribe already knowing exactly what they want evaluated. Others simply know that something has been difficult and want a better understanding of why.

You do not need to determine the diagnosis yourself before requesting an evaluation.

When appropriate, comprehensive psychological assessment can consider multiple possible explanations rather than beginning with the assumption that a particular diagnosis is correct.

You may be wondering:

  • Is this ADHD or anxiety?
  • Could I be autistic?
  • Why is school so much harder for me than it seems to be for other people?
  • Why can I understand the material but struggle to complete assignments?
  • Could I have both ADHD and autism?
  • Why haven’t previous treatments or diagnoses fully explained what I experience?

Does Aetna Student Health Cover Psychological Testing?

Aetna Student Health plans provide behavioral health benefits, and psychological testing may be covered when it is medically necessary and meets the requirements of your individual plan. Cogniscribe is an in-network Aetna provider and accepts Aetna Student Health plans. Because Aetna Student Health plans are designed for individual colleges and universities, benefits and requirements can differ between schools. Depending on your plan, a referral from your campus health or counseling center or additional authorization may be required before receiving services from an outside provider. Our team can review your Aetna Student Health insurance information before scheduling and help determine what may be required for your evaluation. Verification of benefits does not guarantee coverage or payment by the insurance plan.

What to Expect During an Evaluation

Initial Consultation & Clinical Interview

We begin by understanding your concerns, relevant history, current functioning, and the questions you hope the evaluation will answer.

Psychological Testing

Your evaluation is individualized based on the referral question and your clinical needs. Testing may examine areas such as attention, executive functioning, cognitive abilities, academic functioning, social communication, emotional functioning, or other relevant areas.

Comprehensive Report

The information gathered throughout the evaluation is integrated into a written report describing the findings, diagnostic impressions when appropriate, and individualized recommendations.

Feedback & Recommendations

We review the results with you, answer questions, and discuss recommendations and appropriate next steps.

Academic Support

Evaluations and Academic Accommodations

Psychological assessment may provide information that is useful when a student is seeking academic accommodations or other educational support.

When clinically appropriate, evaluation reports can document relevant diagnoses, functional limitations, assessment findings, and recommendations.

Cogniscribe does not determine eligibility for academic accommodations. Accommodation decisions are made by the student’s university or other appropriate institution according to its own policies and requirements.

If you are seeking an evaluation specifically for accommodations, we recommend reviewing your university’s documentation requirements before testing whenever possible.

Psychological Assessment Across California

Cogniscribe Psychological Services provides psychological evaluations for students throughout California. Depending on the type of evaluation and the individual’s clinical needs, assessments may be completed remotely through telehealth, in person at our Sacramento-area office, or through a combination of remote and in-person services.

Many components of psychological assessment can be completed remotely, including clinical interviews, questionnaires, and certain forms of psychological testing. For some evaluations, however, specific tests, clinical circumstances, or assessment requirements may make in-person testing necessary or preferable.

We determine the appropriate format individually so that the evaluation remains clinically appropriate and the results are valid and reliable.

Contact our team to discuss remote or in-person evaluation options.

Why Cogniscribe?

Our evaluations are individualized to the clinical question and may incorporate multiple sources of information rather than relying solely on brief screening measures.

Diagnostic Clarification

We consider overlapping and alternative explanations when symptoms may involve more than one psychological or neurodevelopmental condition.

College & Adult Assessment

We work with college students and adults, including individuals seeking an ADHD or autism diagnosis for the first time.
