What Is Autistic Masking?
Masking describes conscious or unconscious strategies used to hide autistic traits and meet social expectations.

Autistic masking can include rehearsing conversations, copying facial expressions, suppressing self-regulating movements, or carefully monitoring tone and eye contact. These strategies may help someone move through school, work, or relationships without drawing attention to their differences.
Masking can also require significant energy. Over time, some people experience exhaustion, anxiety, reduced self-confidence, or a sense that others do not know their authentic self. Understanding masking can be an important part of an adult autism evaluation.
