Autism vs. Social Anxiety
Autism and social anxiety can both affect social situations, but the underlying experiences and developmental histories may differ.

Social anxiety is characterized by fear of negative evaluation and avoidance driven by that fear. Autism involves developmental differences in social communication, sensory processing, routines, and patterns of interest. Some autistic people also experience social anxiety, particularly after repeated misunderstandings or exclusion.
Careful assessment helps distinguish these possibilities and recognizes when both are present. The resulting recommendations can then address anxiety while also respecting neurodevelopmental needs.
